66 SAN ANTONIO-HER TRADE,
himself in business in 1865, in a moderate way. He had acquired a prac-
tical knowledge of the business, having twelve years experience in it,
commencing to learn it in 1851.
The history of this house in its growth is a fitting commentary on the
handsome progress of this city. Industrious and enterprising, and con-
ducting his business upon the most elevated plane of mercantile integrity,
he inspired confidence in the trade and attracted custom, hence he suc-
ceeded from the outset. Prosperity has not caused him to relax his efforts
or diminish his ambition, but he still devotes the most sedulous personal
attention to every department. His factory has a large and complete
equipment of the best modern machinery and appliances. Mr. Duerler
uses none but pure sugars and syrups, he does not carry in stock a pound
of adulterative material. Flavoring with natural fruit extracts and using
harmless vegetable coloring material, his products have all the essential
qualities and claims for perfect purity and prime excellence ; and on these
merits he has built his reputation and extended his trade from contracted
limits, until it now radiates through this state and into Mexico. Mr.
Duerler manufactures all varieties of fine and common candies. His bus-
iness premises are commodious and convenient, the main building in
which is situated the store-rooms and office, is 40 by 100 feet in size, two
stories high. The factory building is 25 by 70 feet in dimensions—con-
nected with this business and established about the same time, but carried
on in another department and building, is Mr. Duerler's Sunset Bottling
Works, soda water, sarsparilla, ginger ale, and all kinds of syrups. The
use of beverages which slake the thirst, and are pleasantly cooling and
refreshing, titillating, but neither intoxicating or injuring the system, have
become very popular and are, taking a temperance view, very beneficial.
The best methods so far adopted to supply this demand are the aerated
waters, and other artificial mineral waters, when well made they so closely
approximate natural mineral water, soda-seltzer, vichy, etc.. as to answer
all their purposes. Mr. Duerler manufactures quite a variety, soda-water,
sarsaparilla, ginger-ale, seltzer, vichy, etc., using only pure and innocuous
materials and carbonic acid gas. His products have a wide reputation,
both in this city and throughout the state and in Mexico. The factory
building is 25 by 50 feet in size and it is completely equipped with all nec-
essary machinery and appliances for preparing and bottling his products.
Mr. Duerler employs fitfeen hands in all departments of his business. He
carries an average stock of $15,00 in value. His annual transactions will
reach $90,000. Still actuated by the same enterprise and ambition which
animated him in the start, Mr. Duerler is yearly augmenting his bus-
iness, adding meritorious improvements and advancing the quality of his
products, conducting his business in every department with zealous care
and upon legitimate business principles, upright and liberal in his policy,
his is, the representative establishment in his lines in the State of Texas.
