liberal merchant, and his business has grown from modest dimensions to
be the most extensive in the State of Texas. He established himself in
1880, with but moderate capital, and his success has been fairly remark-
able; confined at first to the limits of the city of San Antonio, it now ra-
diates through the State, into Mexico, to New York, in fact, in some of
his specialties all over the country. His business is not confined to making
loans on deposit of collaterals, but he also deals in general merchandise,
carrying a large stock of articles coming into daily use and demand. His
stock is very comprehensive, most any want can be supplied; he says of
himself that he "keeps a little of everything, from a fine diamond to a
second-hand coffin," or, we might add, from a first-class banker's or jew-
eler's safe to a lead pencil. It is par-excellence the place to get what one
wants, and to get it at a fair living price and without extortion. Mr.
Emerson is the sole assignee and owner of Emerson's Patent Safety Neck
Yoke, one of the most valuable inventions of this day of genius and
inventions. It consists of the pole tip and clamp; the yoke stands in front of
pole, thereby keeping it out of mischief. The lines cannot catch over the

been vexed by the lines catching on the protruding pole. The driver fre-
quently has to get out in midstream to unhitch the line, especially where
the pole is light, and the team spirited. A gentleman rides out with his
family end as they go up or down a steep hill, how anxiously he looks at
the traces and shudders at the thought of anything giving way. Should
one trace snap or one whiffletree split, or one of the tips pull off, almost
certain death would result to those in the carriage. The safety yoke is
