Invention, the hand-maiden of civilization, is constantly adding im-
provements, to old devices, which have about run their day, to necessary
facilities for man's comfort and convenience, and in no direction have
they been more marked or beneficial than in wind mills and pumps. In
sections where power is not readily available,
as well as in all agricultural districts, where
running streams and living springs do not exist,
they are of inestimable value. The history of
hydraulic pumps and wind mills cannot be clear-
ly traced, they are the oldest mechanical devices
that have come down to us from the ancients.
Methods of raising water by wheels, with
buckets attached to their periphery ; the power
supplied by wind-mills were used by the ancient
Egyptians and Assyrians. The chain pump was
derived from the Chinese. The improvements
in pumps and wind-mills in modern times,
have been many and various. In an experience
in collecting statistics and investigating claims
during the past six years, we have met none
that so completely fill the bill, to use a semi-
slangy expression, as the Eclipse, handled by F.
                                         F. Collins, which are without a rival for sim-
                                         plicity, durability and satisfactory working.
They are in use by many railroads and exten-
sive ranchmen, and have universally given
satisfaction. In fact, they are without rivals.
The " Eclipse" was the original and the
first solid wheel mill patented, and its
